Allergy testing in Lucknow: what it can tell you, and what it cannot

· 5 min read · Lucknow

The immunoassay analyser used for allergy testing

Allergy testing is one of the most requested and most misunderstood investigations. The seasonal dust and pollen load in Lucknow means a great many people have symptoms worth explaining — and a great many end up with a broad panel that lists a dozen positives and explains nothing.

The central point is this: testing does not diagnose allergy. Your history does. Testing confirms or refutes a suspicion the history has already raised.

What the tests measure

Specific IgE blood testing measures antibodies to individual allergens. It can be done regardless of skin condition or antihistamine use, which makes it practical when skin testing is not.

Skin prick testing introduces tiny amounts of allergen into the skin and reads the reaction after about fifteen minutes. It is fast and often more sensitive, but it must be done where anaphylaxis can be managed, and antihistamines have to be stopped beforehand.

Total IgE — a single number without specificity — is of limited use for diagnosing a particular allergy. It rises in allergic conditions but also in parasitic infection and other states, which is common enough in India to make it a poor standalone test.

Why a positive result is not an allergy

Sensitisation means antibodies are present. Allergy means exposure actually causes symptoms. Plenty of people are sensitised to things they eat and encounter with no trouble at all, and a positive result on a broad panel in someone without matching symptoms most often reflects that.

This is where broad panels do harm. A child who tests positive to eight foods and has never reacted to any of them can end up on a needlessly restrictive diet, which carries its own nutritional cost. The test should follow the suspicion, not generate it.

Equally, a negative test in someone with a convincing history is not a licence to ignore it — no test is perfect, and the history still leads.

  • Suspected food allergy with a clear, reproducible reaction to a specific food
  • Suspected drug allergy, particularly where the drug is needed
  • Persistent allergic rhinitis or asthma where identifying a trigger would change management
  • Anaphylaxis of unclear cause
  • Severe eczema not responding to treatment, on specialist advice

What actually helps in Lucknow

For dust mite and pollen sensitivity — the most common picture here — identifying the trigger matters less than managing exposure and treating symptoms properly. Bedding hygiene, keeping windows shut during high-pollen and high-dust periods, air filtration where practical, and correctly used regular medication achieve more than a test result.

If your symptoms follow a season each year, keeping a simple symptom diary for a few weeks is often more informative than a panel, and costs nothing. Take it to your doctor and the conversation starts in a much better place.
