Health checkup for older parents in Lucknow: what actually matters after 60

The reception desk at Charak Diagnostic Centre

Arranging tests for an ageing parent is one of the most common reasons people call a diagnostic centre, and it comes with a practical problem alongside the medical one: getting someone frail across Lucknow, fasting, in traffic, is often harder than the test itself.

It is worth being deliberate about what is genuinely useful after sixty, because the right panel is different from the one that makes sense at thirty-five — and longer is not better.

The tests that change management most

Kidney function deserves particular attention, because so many common medicines are cleared by the kidneys and doses need adjusting as function declines. Creatinine with eGFR should be a standing part of any older adult's panel.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is both common in this age group and frequently missed, and it can present as memory difficulty, unsteadiness or tingling — symptoms often written off as ageing. Thyroid disease is similarly under-recognised, and hypothyroidism in an older person can look like slowing down rather than illness.

  • CBC — anaemia is common and is often the first sign of something else
  • Creatinine with eGFR, and urine routine
  • Fasting glucose and HbA1c
  • Lipid profile, interpreted alongside overall cardiovascular risk
  • TSH — thyroid disease presents atypically in older adults
  • Vitamin B12 and vitamin D
  • Calcium, and bone density where there is fracture risk or known osteoporosis
  • ECG, and an echo where there are symptoms or known cardiac disease

The things that are not blood tests

Some of the highest-value checks in this age group involve no laboratory at all. Blood pressure, checked properly and repeatedly. Vision and hearing, both of which quietly reduce independence and are correctable. A medication review, because polypharmacy causes a great deal of avoidable harm.

And a falls assessment. Fractured hips in older adults change lives, and the risk factors — poor vision, low vitamin D, unsteady gait, sedating medicines, hazards at home — are largely addressable before the fall rather than after it.

Making it practical in Lucknow

Home sample collection removes the hardest part of the day: the fasting bloods can be drawn at home before breakfast, leaving only the tests that genuinely require the centre — ECG, echo, X-ray, bone density and ultrasound.

If a visit is needed, ask for an early appointment, carry the full medicine list and previous reports, and mention any mobility difficulty when booking so it can be planned for. Charak has pathology, imaging and cardiac testing in one building at Chowk, which for an older patient means one building rather than a tour of the city.
